Un-tourist like tours of Saigon City
Since starting this site I've received a lot of emails and messages from people who have found it helpful and used the information to assist them in their travels in Vietnam. And now, well, to take things one step further and, following on from numerous requests for such a thing, I have decided to offer my services as a low-key tour guide around Saigon.
This isn't designed as a flash "tourist" service for the city, but rather as a safe, personalised (and personal) service on the back of my trusty 1972 Honda Cub that will lead you to experience a much more authentic side of Saigon. It is perfect for single travellers who feel a little intimidated by the undoubtedly fairly intimidating city Saigon can be. All the hassles, scams and other difficulties which can be experienced in a bustling city like Saigon will be avoided as I speak the language, know how to deal with the touts and scammers and have an extensive range of good local contacts. So, basically, it's a unique opportunity to see Saigon with someone who lives here.
The deal is you get me and my motorbike for the day and I’ll show you around the city. It’s not an organised tour by any means but I’m sure it will be far more fun. This is the simple rundown on how things work ... I’ll come to your hotel about 10am and from there we can grab a quick coffee and discuss what you want to see. This may include the War Museum, the Reunification Palace, the Notre Dame Church, the Ben Thanh Market or any other tourist sites you might want see.
Importantly I can also show you some cool bars and restaurants that you would be unlikely to find if on your own. I will also, if you wish, take you to some small local places for lunch or a coffee, well away from the tourist areas. You will definitely see a side of the city that you wouldn't normally see and you will actually meet the people rather than feel as though you are looking at their world in a genuine way.
Cost will be $50 US per person for about 6 hours (10am to 4pm). You won't have to bargain with me to try to get a good price, plus I’ll wait while you visit any museums etc (entry cost not included, sorry). As I said, it's perfect for people travelling alone who want to look around and want some information with no transport or language problems. If more than one person wishes to be onboard, then I will hire one of my trustworthy local drivers to take any extra people.
Saigon is an incredibly interesting city – but it can definitely be challenging for first-time visitors. My aim is to assist such people in getting an authentic taste of the town in a short period of time. It's a city of delicious and cheap food, even cheaper beer, incredible history and amazing sites I’m sure you'll have a great time and it might just be one of the most interesting days of your trip. And if you need any information for the rest of your trip in Vietnam, I’m happy to help with that too.
NOTE: At present this service is only available on weekends. I can possibly organise a weekday tour or night tour if necessary. Please contact if interested gibsonsimon@hotmail.com
I can also help you with any hotel or travel bookings you wish to make – just email and let me know what you need.
